A public meeting next week will be discussing the standard of York’s roads and footpaths, a council responsibility frequently cited as a top priority for York residents.

Councillors will also be discussing the city’s ‘Purple Flag’ status, and the extent to which it indicates York city centre is a safe and welcoming city for people to visit and spend time in.  And a new system of developer contributions for public benefit such as for transport, housing and sports and open space will also be on the agenda.

Chair of the council’s Economy and Place scrutiny committee, Cllr Kallum Taylor said:

“Three topics we’re scrutinising this time around offer a mix of issues we know residents want the Council to either get a grip on or improve in; be that getting developers to properly contribute back to the communities they’re making money from; making the city’s evening economy enjoyable and safe for all; and the well-known state of our worsening roads and footpaths.

“Unfortunately the council doesn’t promote scrutiny meetings to the public in the way it does with Executive decision making meetings.  But scrutiny meetings are one of the few places where real challenge exists and where questions can be put to the city’s ruling politicians and leading officers by other councillors and the public.

“I’d like to highlight to residents that these meetings exist, encourage them to come along and that they’re more than welcome to speak on Tuesday – be that in person, over the phone, or on zoom – on whichever topic takes their interest”.

Residents wishing to speak on any topic at the meeting should contact the council’s Democratic Services team asap at: democratic.services@york.gov.uk or by calling 01904 551078.

The meeting takes place at West Offices on Tuesday 18th October, at 5.30pm, and can also be watched online: https://www.york.gov.uk/webcasts
