A petition will be presented to the council next week seeking investigation of a low traffic neighbourhood for Harcourt Street in Heworth.

The street has the benefit of having other roads running off it at each end that provide a convenient, viable alternative for drivers to use, one that would add almost no extra time to journeys.

Heworth Ward Councillor Claire Douglas will present the petition. She said:

“This is a fairly short stretch of road and switching it to a low traffic street that’s only used for access will make a big difference to its residents.  Most residents living on the street have signed a petition calling for the council to explore this option, so I hope this will now happen promptly.

“When there is negligible impact on other road users, this makes perfect sense.  It’s also a real example of local residents using their initiative to seek improvements to their local area, and it’s now down to the council to respond to that initiative and show that it is a council that listens and responds to its residents”.

The proposal for Harcourt Street would be reasonably straight-forward to implement, were it to be approved, and would maintain access for residents of Harcourt Street, Fleming Avenue, Glen Road and Emmerson Street.

The petition will be presented at a meeting of Full Council at 6.30pm on 14th July at the Guildhall.
