Councillor for Holgate

Rachel Melly - Councillor for Holgate

Rachel moved to York 10 years ago for university, but fell in love with the city and decided to stay. Over the last few years she has had a variety of jobs in York’s tourism sector and campaigning jobs.

In the decade that Rachel has made York her home, she has worked for two local, independent businesses that have closed down. She has also worked in several other waitressing and customer service jobs in the city centre, and has experienced first hand the problems York faces due to the prevalence of low paid, insecure work and high housing costs. She would like to help develop York into a city where local businesses can thrive and nobody has to struggle to afford a home.

Rachel has been involved in the Labour Party for several years, in York and in other areas of the country. She is an active part of York Labour Women’s Forum, York LGBTQ Labour, and Labour Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, as well as several other local groups and organisations.
