David Skaith – Labour’s York and North Yorkshire Mayoral Candidate says:

“Under the Conservatives, York and North Yorkshire’s police service have been hollowed out which has meant too many victims have been failed and criminals have been let off the hook. North Yorkshire police saw a rise in domestic abuse calls between 2021 and 2022 and demand for refuge accommodation has increased too. As Mayor of York and North Yorkshire I want to ensure our brilliant 999 call handlers have the support they need to handle domestic abuse cases sensitively. I will ensure we have trained domestic abuse specialists working alongside 999 workers to ensure victims are properly and sensitively supported.

As Mayor of York and North Yorkshire I want to see more police officers and police community support officers embedded in our communities, that’s why as Mayor I’ll push for our share of the 13,000 more police and PCSOs that Labour have promised nationally so that everyone in York and North Yorkshire feels safe.

We all want to live in safe communities but our police service, along with all other frontline services, are beyond stretched, making it almost impossible for them to provide the support we need from them. The police in York and North Yorkshire do a brilliant job under very challenging conditions. I will ensure I provide them with the resources they need to keep us safe and support victims of abuse and violence.”
