A new petition has prompted a lively response from both members of the public and local media. A call to ‘Say No to St George’s Field Multi-Storey Car Park’ has attracted nearly 1,000 signatures in less than a week and been highlighted in both the Press and York Mix.

Kate Ravilious, who set up the petition, said, ‘The fact that so many people have signed in such a short time suggests the public are not in favour of this car park and the council needs to sit up and listen.’

Leafleters collecting signatures on the path between the River and St George’s found that passers-by frequently responded with their own objections to the multi-storey.

‘It will be an eyesore!’

‘What about Park and Ride?’

In a photo opportunity with York Mix, members of the broad-based campaign group illustrated the scale of the proposed project by suspending helium balloons at the car park’s height of fifty-two feet four inches.

In what appears a positive development, the Executive decision on the car park has now been put back, probably until June, and will be taken in conjunction with the planning decision on Castle car park.
