News Release from City of York Council Labour Group

Public meeting on Acomb Front Street next steps

Residents and business in the Acomb area are being encouraged to go along to a public meeting to discuss proposals for investment in Acomb Front Street.

Front Street is the intersection of three council wards; Westfield, Acomb and Holgate and all wards will come together for a joint public meeting next week to discuss latest ideas for upcoming public realm improvements.

Emerging ideas follow a controversial move by the former Liberal Democrat administration to introduce a large number of unpopular bollards, a move which is being put right following a strong, negative reception from local residents.

Westfield Ward councillor Emily Nelson urged people to get along and have their say. She comments:

“The meeting will hear from the council’s Regeneration Team working on proposals for Front Street and what changes can be made to improve the public space for everyone’s benefit.

“This meeting will follow the start of a month-long consultation in which we want as many residents and businesses as possible to feed in their views so we get the second phase of these improvements right.

“I’m confident the council has learned from the phase 1 process and will not be introducing new measures without community support. Maximising public input through meetings like this and the consultation is therefore critical to getting the right outcome.

“I hope lots of people will join us at this meeting so we can get their input and deliver a scheme that improves the public space for all”.

The joint ward committee meeting takes place on Wednesday 28th February from 6.30pm-8.30pm at the Gateway Centre in Front Street.
