Our manifesto for a fairer, cleaner and more supportive York

York is a great place to live and work with a rich history of compassion and social justice. But today, it is also a city facing real and growing challenges – from falling wages and unaffordable housing to illegal levels of air pollution and sharp rises in crime. The gap between rich and poor in the city is one of the largest in Britain.

Getting York back on track
Getting York back on track

This manifesto for the local elections on 2 May shows how Labour will turn around the neglect this city has suffered under four years of a Tory/ LibDem coalition running your council. These plans won’t be delivered in isolation. They’ll be delivered in partnership with the agencies, voluntary and community groups working in our city, with the businesses that can help restore vitality to the city’s economy and with you, the residents of York.

These plans will also require Labour to take action nationally. A decade of Tory austerity has seen us lose 60p in every £1 of central government funding for essential services. York has the 9th lowest funding per head of any comparable local authority. We’ll fight for a fairer deal for the city in Westminster and work tirelessly to protect funding for essential services.

Let’s start on 2 May by voting Labour. Let’s start by voting for the only party which, locally and nationally, has the ambition to make York the nation’s best place to live and work.
