York Central Labour MP Rachael Maskell appeared on BBC Radio York this morning to talk about Theresa May’s Brexit deal and the resignation of Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab. Interviewed by Jonathan Cowap, she appeared alongside Scarborough and Whitby Conservative MP Robert Goodwill, who described Mrs May’s plan as “a good deal and I think we should deliver this.”

“It’s all unravelling, isn’t it?” Rachael told Mr Cowap, “We’ve got Dominic Raab on one side and Dominic Grieve on the other side both saying they are not going to be able to support this deal, and the deal has no chance now of getting through parliament. Sadly, the whole thing has come crashing down around the government’s ears, and that’s the state we find ourselves waking up to this morning.”

Referring to Labour’s six tests that they have stated had to be met to support a deal, which Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn has clearly stated have not been met, she said: “This doesn’t even meet any of our tests, and we set that out very clearly for the Prime Minister, an opportunity for her to reach across the parties and across the country, which she has refused to do. She’s carried out these negotiations in secret, away from the public, and away from the rest of parliament, and now as we predicted, if you don’t include people in the process, and involve them in the discussions about the direction of travel, of course it’s going to be much harder to get through. She hasn’t even been able to get this through her own party, now in tatters.”

Calling for a change of government, she said: “We can’t be in the state we are in at the moment, that’s absolutely clear, but we have stated very clearly that it has to be a general election, because the negotiating team has to change. This government has abjectly failed the people of the country, and that can’t continue.”
