City of York Council Labour Group
The Labour Group is made up of the 18 Labour Councillors elected to the City of York Council in 2003.
The 18 work together to represent the interests of their wards and the people of York as a whole.
We are the main opposition to the Liberal Democrats on York Council.
We believe the Liberal Democrats hoodwinked their way to power with slogans such as £100 off Council Tax. Instead they have increased expenditure and Council Tax as fast as they can, and have wasted millions of pounds of taxpayers money in the process, while letting down the people of York on many of their promises (such as maintaining 3 public swimming pools, giving priority to community safety, cutting ward committee funding, etc.).
Labour has nine members who make up the Council’s Shadow Executive, shadowing the decision making executive and the majority group’s individual portfolio holders.
The Group meets monthly and before the main full Council meeting. Representatives of the local Labour Party also attend these meetings.
It co-ordinates Group members activity across the Council and agrees the policies and their involvement in Council business.
As well as representing their local wards Members of the Labour Group also take part in a wide
range of advisory panels and committees.
The Labour Group is supported by a Political Assistant who assists Labour Councillors with their Council activities. If you have any further questions regarding the Labour Group (but not local ward issues) please contact Nick Wharton at nick.wharton@york.gov.uk
