Dr Roger Pierce
Councillor - Hull Road
Personal Details
- Roger is an architect, planner and former teacher at the University of York. He is married with with three children. He supports Sunderland AFC and Hibs. His interests include playing the flute, singing, painting, cycling and motor-cycling.
- He objected at the Heslington East public inquiry. He has a lifetime experience of working with and for local government in Yorkshire. He knows local government can improve people’s lives especially in terms of better and more housing, transport and jobs.
- He believes that only the Labour Party really places the interests and well-being of the majority before those of the wealthy minority of business and landlords. He also thinks that only a Labour-led city council will successfully tackle the key issues in Hull Road ward: impact of university expansion and Derwenthorpe; exploitation of students and their neighbours by private landlords; public transport; crime reduction; road safety; and local parking problems.
The campaign
Tackling crime and ensuring neighbourhood security
We will work with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team to ensure that Hull Road is a safe place to live. We will bring together the Police, Council Officers and other agencies to tackle crime and disorder when it happensDerwenthorpe and Heslington East Developments
At the time of writing, the outcome of the Public Inquiries is not known. We are especially concerned about the impact of these developments on the road network in the Hull Road area. We will represent the concerns of residents to ensure that your day to day lives are not unduly disrupted by these developments if they are allowed to go ahead.Improving the relationship between residents and the University
We will work to ensure that private landlords meet high standards of accommodation, both to ensure students are in good quality , safe housing and to maintain a good standard of external appearance of student housing in the Hull Road area. We will also work to ensure that landlords inform tenants about any parking and bin collection days. If the University expansion goes ahead we will press for the maximum amount of student accommodation on that site to reduce the pressure on family housing in the Ward.Swimming
With the Lib Dem closure and sell off of the Barbican swimming pool, we will campaign for the retention of the Kent Street site and the reprovision of a swimming pool on it .Official Council Details
