Janet Looker
Councillor - Guildhall Ward
Personal Details
- I've been Councillor for Guildhall ward for over 20 years. I still believe that representing the city centre is a privilege and take my responsibilities for that very seriously. I am a governor at Park Grove School as well as more recently becoming a governor at Canon Lee School and enjoy the involvement with staff, pupils and parents that that gives me.
- I am now retired, having worked as a solicitor in the city for over 25 years, but find my time is filled with council activities, community involvement and voluntary activity. I am on the Board of York Credit Union and serve in one of the City Centre Savings Points once a month, valuing the opportunity to bring cheap and safe banking facilities to people who may feel excluded by the main high street banks.
- I also keep involved with my family, particularly my four grandchildren, and when I have nothing else to do I walk the dog which goes a little way towards keeping me fit.
The campaign
Support Local Community Organisations
- We are involved in lots of things that concern residents and support Residents Associations
- We will work to support community groups and in particular new opportunities for community meeting points.
- We will reduce Respark fees to ensure we are protecting local communities
Extend recycling to terraced areas and flats
- We will work to provide bespoke solutions to the various types of flats in the area
- We will ensure that terraced areas get more recycling
- For those areas that cannot be reached by a vehicle, we will work to get ‘bring banks’ that are suitable for the areas concerned
Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour
- We work and will continue to work with Neighbourhood Crime and Community Action Groups in the Walmgate and Navigation Road area and in the Groves.
- We will bring police and neighbourhood concerns directly together so that residents can get a direct line to both police and the Council to tackle crime and disorder when it happens.
- We will work with residents to get alleygates in terraced back lanes to prevent burglary
Improve street cleaning
- We will ensure gullies and drains are cleaned regularly
- We will support manual sweeping of footpaths and back lanes.
Improving air quality and congestion
- We will campaign for measures to tackle congestion in the City centre such as park and ride sites on the edge of town
- We will support the low emission zone for the City Centre to improve air quality
