Janet Looker

Councillor - Guildhall

  • I have been a Councillor for Guildhall ward for over 25 years and although the ward has changed in many ways over the years it is still both a privilege and a great pleasure to represent the residents of this City Centre ward.
  • Since the 2011 election which saw Labour take control I have been on the Council's cabinet, and after a very brief stint as Cabinet member for Waste and Environmental Services I am now the Cabinet Member for Education, Children's Services and Skills. Part of this role does involve visiting schools in the city, and I do enjoy the opportunity to get out and visit both Headteachers and pupils at the various schools in York.
  • I still enjoy community involvement in the ward; the Residents Associations in both the Groves area, and the Navigation Rd./Walmgate area; the new Community and Young People's Centre at Door 84 in Lowther St. and the many other groups and organisations that are based in Guildhall. I sit on the Area Planning Committee which gives me a good opportunity to review a lot of the planning applications that come forward, and I also sit on the Licensing committee which also finds itself actively concerned with a lot of applications within the City Centre.
  • Now that I am retired from my work as a Solicitor, I have more time (in theory), but find the Council keeps me very active. But in my leisure, I walk the dog, visit the theatre, and make time for seeing my four grandchildren.
