Anna Semlyen

Councillor - Dringhouses and Woodthorpe

Elected in May 2011, I represent Dringhouses and Woodthorpe Ward with fellow Labour Cllr Gerard Hodgson. Ours is a three seat split ward with the Lib Dems.

I plan to help a diverse range of groups in Dringhouses & Woodthorpe to bid for funding and to enhance local people's skills and thereby the area. Also to focus on improving the ward's transport, sustainability and facilities, especially for children. Of course, as your local Councillor, I will listen and act on residents' concerns and be directed to do the work YOU feel is important.

My pivotal life moment was a road crash in 1992 when knocked off my bike. A broken leg, yoga therapy and road safety campaigning were results. I teach Yoga in York (Link to, have done research on yoga for the low back and work part time for 20's Plenty for Us as National Campaign Manager. I have written on yoga and traffic reduction including Cutting Your Car Use (sales at 115,000+ copies).

I moved to York in 1991 (from Oxford and Twickenham), am married with a daughter and two step sons. I have a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (Oxon) and MSc in Health Economics (York) plus British Wheel of Yoga Dip. A varied career has spanned self employment and paid work in health service administration, health and transport research, public relations, transport consultancy, children's consultation and funding bidding for playground development, mediation in schools with children close to exclusion, author of books (6) and articles, yoga teacher/teacher trainer, public speaker on traffic reduction and teacher/performer of circus skills.

I Chair 20's Plenty for York residential speed reduction campaign, established York Playground Action Group and have sustainable ethics, for instance I am a non-driver by choice preferring to cycle. I have halved the carbon footprint of my home and regularly host open houses at my home in Fishergate on energy efficiency to showcase solar power and solid wall insulating wallpaper. I have been events organiser for York in Transition, a local group focusing on energy decline and climate change.

I am offering expertise in bidding for funding to groups in the ward to help them get started or make more of their volunteer time and skills. The most prolific ward scheme suggestions submitter in York, I am never short of ideas and am enthusiastic doer and always willing to learn.

Please contact me and tell me how to make York better. 01904 654355 / 07891 98910
