York signs letter on fairer funding
17 November 2011

York has puts its name to a letter calling for fairer funding of education across the country.

York has been a member of f40, a campaign group of the 40 lowest funded education authorities in the country, for many years.
And now Labour Cabinet Member for Education, Coun. Ruth Potter, has added York’s name to a letter (below), calling for Education Secretary, Michael Gove, to implement a fair system of funding.

She says:
“York has long had a raw deal in its funding for education, partly because of the fantastic job we do here in educating our children and young people for the future on a comparatively low level of funding.

“But a recent consultation on reform to the system of funding is the right time for us to speak up, with other councils, on the inequity of the current system.

“The letter we are sending to Michael Gove argues for a basic per pupil funding entitlement for all pupils based upon a clear assessment of need, as well as for the breaking down of major disparities in funding that currently exist.

“I hope that we receive a constructive response from the Government, so that York gets what it is due in the future”.
