City centre litter clearance failure slammed
21 June 2010
Chair of the council's Economic and City Development Scrutiny Committee, Coun David Scott, has today slammed the state of litter collection in the city centre over the Bank Holiday weekend (31 May)

Coun. Scott said:

"I was in the city centre on Sunday and Monday, over the bank holiday weekend, and I was ashamed at the state of the city's litter bins. By mid-afternoon on both days, litter bins were overflowing.

"Residents and visitors to the city had done their bit by putting their litter in the bins but the council had let them down by not making sure they were emptied. I can only wonder what impression visitors to the city thought at the site of bin after bin overflowing. In a great historic city that relies upon tourism, this is simply not good enough. This is not the impression businesses and residents want or expect.

"I have raised this with the Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods and I am awaiting her response. With the summer tourist season now upon us, urgent action needs to be taken".
