Proposals include extra pedestrian crossings, footway widening and the creation of pedestrian refuge islands to make road crossings easier and safer.
Labour's highways and transport spokesperson, Coun. Ruth Potter commented:
"There are real positives to be taken from these proposals, which I have given my support to. The high importance of pedestrians in the Local Transport Plan's hierarchy of transport users means more should be done to encourage walking as a way of getting around, especially for short trips.
"The new crossings on Paragon Street are necessary due to the speed at which traffic approaches from the direction of Skeldergate Bridge, while a new zebra crossing and footway widening outside Fishergate Primary will create a safer environment for children and parents making their way to school.
"Improvements are also proposed to make the gyratory less threatening to cyclists. Fast traffic along two lanes can be a daunting prospect, and one that is likely to put off many cyclists, but new cycle lanes will certainly help in this respect.
"A further significant change involves the two lane bend linking Fawcett Street to Fishergate going down to one lane. On the whole all of these changes would improve the area, should they be agreed. What I'm sorry hasn't featured for recommendation though is a crossing of some sort in the vicinity of the Mason's Arms, near the bottom of Piccadilly, as people will still chance it crossing what will remain something of a dangerous road.
"I also believe a 20mph outside the two schools would have been appropriate, and would urge the Executive Member to give this his consideration".
