More money wasted at Hungate site
01 June 2010
The cost of the demolition and clearance of the former Peasholme Hostel has been disclosed to the new Chair of the Economic and City Development Scrutiny Committee, Coun. David Scott. The tender received was £18,000 to do the job.

Coun. Scott said:

"This Lib Dem administration has just wasted another £18,000 of residents' money removing the former Peasholme Hostel from the Hungate site. When added to the potential income that could have been achieved from the building until the site is eventually sold, the cost just keeps going up and up and the waste keeps mounting."

"The only political party that wanted this demolishing in such haste was the Lib Dems and the only reason for it was that they wanted to erase the memory of waste before the next election. The Chief Executive rejected last minute requests for the demolition to be delayed from both myself and Coun Ian Gillies, Conservative Group Leader."

"£18,000 is almost as much as it was planned to be saved by this administration by the removal of respite care in their budget. This represents yet another example of waste and missed opportunity. The residents of York really do deserve better than this."
