Green Streets team marks World Environment Day
01 June 2010
World Environment Day (WED) takes place on 5th June and some local activists are marking the day with an information stall next to the new sculpture on Bishopthorpe Road.

The individuals make up the Green Streets team for Bishopthorpe Road, a project which runs alongside the 10:10 campaign, with the objective of reducing carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010 in the local area.

Local Micklegate ward councillor Julie Gunnell is part of that team, and is helping to organise the WED event in her ward. She said:

"The Green Streets challenge is a fantastic year long campaign that is encouraging residents of six neighbourhoods in the city to do their bit in meeting the 10:10 objective. We are focussed on giving people the right information that will help them make informed choices about travel, waste reduction and their consumption habits.
"Bishopthorpe Road is a great area for this to be taking place as people are keen to do their bit for the environment, and I'm happy to part of something that supports them to do this.

"We will be telling residents what we have been doing and sharing our ideas. There is nothing forceful about it, and people can make whatever changes they feel comfortable with. The campaign is about encouragement, and I believe that is the best way of changing behaviour.

"There are so many ways for people to do their bit. The Green Streets Challenge is a great initiative to provide easy, practical ideas for people to reduce their impact on the planet, but which will also provide a financial benefit to them as consumers.

"I urge people to drop by and see us, and they can also see the marvellous new sculpture the Ward Committee has commissioned. It is an example of how we are enhancing the ward, and some of the tips we will share on WED will help in a different way".

The stall will be held between 9.30am and 12.30pm.
