Coun. Scott said:
"I have been warning the authority for over a year that it needed to get their act together if it was to avoid the potential claims. As an employment solicitor as well as a Councillor, I know only too well of the dangers of litigation for the Council and its finances.
"It is only a matter of a month or so that we saw Birmingham City Council was likely to have to pay out record sums for equal pay claims. York should not allow itself to have the same problems. The affect of these additional claims could place a significant strain on the Council's budget.
"It is only right that all councils, including York, should address pay inequalities and pay compensation for past mistakes. I accept that historically all parties have been guilty of failing to address the problems of equal pay, however all the claims that can now be made fall squarely at the door of this Lib Dem administration".
