Media Release from City of York Council Labour Group
new Government plans.
The new coalition Government's plans to abolish or replace existing Regional Development Agencies, such as Yorkshire Forward, have created uncertainty around its commitment to part-fund a number of renaissance posts at City of York Council.
A York Renaissance Team had been agreed to work on the delivery of major developments within the city's economic masterplan. Such work would shape the future of York's economic development for a generation, and include architects and an urban designer.
Labour leader Coun. James Alexander said:
"There are six new posts which form the new York Renaissance Team within the city council, with at least five of those posts funded by Yorkshire Forward.
"Given the new Government's plans, this throws the whole Renaissance Project into uncertainty. Unfortunately the Government plans seem not to be sufficiently defined at this stage from a financial point of view, meaning many councils like York are left in limbo, not knowing where they stand".
"The Renaissance team is a very welcome addition to efforts in York to address a number of significant issues around how we enhance the very special offer York has for residents and visitors, including maximising the benefits of the city in the public realm. The possible loss of these posts could set back major developments like York Central and York NorthWest years, after years of waiting to see major progress.
"I will be keeping in close contact with council officers on what the consequences will be with this decision as it would be a poor first gesture from a fledgling administration to send this message to York".
