Accident fear over new shared use path
01 June 2010
Completed improvements to the pathway on Crichton Avenue in Clifton have been welcomed, but safety concerns remain for one local councillor who pushed for the original changes to be made.

Coun. Helen Douglas says the shared use path crossing the bridge is now a danger to both cyclists and pedestrians, as the council has failed to mark any separation line for the two groups of users. She said:

"After some sense of achievement at helping to get these changes made, specifically with improved safety in mind, I'm incredibly disappointed that this safety issue remains. I've made numerous attempts to communicate with council officers to discuss the issue but have simply been ignored. I have a valid concern and I'm going to persist in my attempts until something is done. This undoes some of the good work that has gone before it, for the sake of not painting a couple of lines which I find baffling, and also wasteful".

"People are at risk of being hit, as some bikes do travel quite quickly over the brow of the bridge, by which time they can be on top of people walking, sometimes with pushchairs and prams.

"After eventually getting an officer to respond, I'm told they think the shared path is too narrow to segregate over the bridge, but it is three metres wide which is ample. My guess is the cost of tactile paving is the more likely obstacle for the council, but that is not going to placate local residents who see this as more of a problem than officers probably realise".

"The path as it stands is unfinished and dangerous, for the majority of the distance between the Burton Stone Lane junction and Wigginton Road. Someone needs to get up there with some paint and finish the job".
