The move follows uproar in areas of Westfield and Holgate wards over council plans to stop back alley collections, with the council offering unclear explanations for the change, according to Labour councillors.
Shadow neighbourhoods spokesperson, Coun. Ken King said:
"I'm pleased in one sense that the council has finally decided to listen to residents, but unfortunately this is only after seeing the amount of displeasure amongst residents, which could have been avoided through proper consultation.
"I understand this will now happen and that each ward's councillors will also be consulted on tailoring the refuse collection service to local needs. I look forward to playing a part in making sure that this is conducted properly, and in a meaningful way, so that residents value the process and don't just think it consultation for consultation's sake. Different solutions are needed in different areas, but then we knew that before this policy was rolled out, just as the Lib Dem council knew this.
"It is right that efficiencies are made all across the council including in refuse collection where possible, but the council must still provide a decent service. If it doesn't, then it's inaccurate to suggest residents are getting More for York, when their experience is quite the opposite. Proper refuse collection is a pretty basic expectation that all residents have and which should be met through the council tax they pay".
