Media Release from City of York Council Labour Group
The station on Acomb Road, which falls within Holgate ward, will be re-opened this Thursday by Assistant Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police and former York Chief Superintendent, Tim Madgwick.
Coun. Denise Bowgett, who represents Holgate, said:
"This was a very early commitment from the three of us when we were campaigning to get elected in Holgate back in 2007. I'm delighted that after perseverance and good working relations with the Police that we have delivered on this commitment as it will benefit residents of both Holgate and Acomb wards immensely".
"The station re-opening will rely on a volunteer contingent to be a success so I would urge those community-minded people to come forward and register an interest following the opening"
Alterations have been made to the building to get it set up to serve the public once again, which reflects part of a wider strategy to put police stations back into communities rather than having all services operating from a central location. And although just a trial at this stage, councillors are hoping the exercise becomes a permanent feature of local policing in the area.
"This is a hugely positive development in how policing is delivered in the ward", said Coun. Sonja Crisp. "We want local policing teams to be responsive to local events and so we support the Safer Neighbourhood Team being located in the area it serves. I'm pleased this will be the case for both the Holgate and Acomb teams.
"I'm confident this will lead to improvements in local policing and I congratulate North Yorkshire Police for listening to, and acting on, what residents want to make their neighbourhoods safer".
The opening takes place at 9.00am on Thursday 1st April.
