Media Release from City of York Council Labour Group

Minister contacted on rail firm collapse
09 April 2010
Efforts to get key figures around the table got underway today when the city's Labour Group Leader spoke with the Government Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber concerning the plight of rail maintenance firm Jarvis.

The company yesterday went into administration after cuts to its order book meant it was no longer able to remain viable. Coun. David Scott said the Minister was concerned about the potential loss of jobs and agreed that the suggestion of a meeting with key players was necessary.

He said:

"I spoke with the Government Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber, Rosie Winterton, today and she is concerned about the implications for local jobs of Jarvis going into administration.

"She feels a meeting with the administrators, Yorkshire Forward, the local MP and other leading politicians is worthwhile in trying to map out a way forward for the business and the many hard-working staff that are now at threat of redundancy.

"It is essential that we now look at what help is available, be it from the council, the Government, Yorkshire Forward or whoever else in protecting those employed by Jarvis, which in York is some 250 to 300 people. York is coping well in the current climate, but it is only by tackling these challenges when they arise that the city will prove resilient in tough times.

"I welcome the Minister's offer of help and look forward to doing what I can to protect these jobs for the future".
