Almost £23m of funding has been agreed for sites at Wigginton Road and the A59 entries to the city, while some of the money will go towards the relocation and increased capacity of Askham Bar Park and Ride site.
Labour's transport spokesperson, Coun. Ruth Potter, welcomed the decision saying:
"This is fantastic news and yet something that could have been agreed far sooner had the Liberal Democrats had the will and planning in place where the A59 site is concerned. Labour was planning for this Park and Ride as far back as 2002, and the Government money has always been there, once the plans were properly drawn up and consulted on.
"However, the overall increase in capacity is hugely significant in the context of reducing congestion and getting people into more sustainable forms of transport.
"The Access York programme will increase car parking spaces at the various sites by over 42%, which will not only lead to a more comprehensive network of sites, but also give the message that quick and affordable access to the city is available to all.
"Reducing congestion is also an essential part of supporting the local economy. People will be less likely to visit York if they are sat in traffic waiting to get in, but this decision means that scenario is much less likely".
