City of York Council announced the decision earlier today (16 March), amid contrasting views on when the count should take place. Coun. David Scott said:
"I welcome this decision and feel that the electorate should not have to wait another day to know who will be representing them in Parliament. I think the buzz of any election, but especially a Parliamentary Election, means people want to stay up and know the result.
"York will be extremely interesting with the new constituencies and we look forward to seeing even more effective Labour representation for York in the future".
