New shelter agreed for Piccadilly
03 March 2010
Opposition councillors have claimed success after pressing the council to address problems caused by moving a bus stop in the city centre. The bus stop on Piccadilly, which was originally outside the entrance to the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, was moved closer to Foss Bridge in an attempt to reduce congestion on the footway.

Coun. Ruth Potter had expressed her disappointment in January 2009 when the bus stop changes were first made, leaving many passengers, including the elderly, with no shelter in inclement weather. But Coun. Potter now says her representations were listened to in devising a new bus stop layout. She said:

"I'm delighted that the reconfiguring of the bus stops on Piccadilly has resulted in two bus stops which both now enjoy seating and shelters. Improvements have been made by positioning each shelter in such a way that people will queue up the street rather than down it, ensuring better pedestrian flow and safety.

"I'm also pleased that the council has listened to my representations on this issue, and that it has demonstrated that is will listen when minded to. I don't think the original plans were drawn up with the intention of making life difficult for people but unfortunately that was the outcome. This new plan will enable two buses to stop at each bus stop without hampering traffic flow, as well as importantly providing the much needed extra shelter. The scheme is to be welcomed".
