Monkton Road Park design agreed
05 February 2010
A consultation on designs for how new play equipment will fit in to a Heworth park has resulted in a winning design being selected by the public. Residents living off Malton Road in Heworth ward have been given their say on how almost £50,000 of Government cash is to be spent, with residents coming out in favour of the winning design (see attached).

Ward councillor Barbara Boyce responded to the decision, saying:

"This is great news for Monkton Road and the local area as the new play equipment will attract a new group of users, and those that are older than those that usually use park play equipment. It's a vital part of a strategy to promote healthy lifestyles at all ages, and in this case to encourage activity in children between the ages of 8 and 13.

Fellow ward councillor Tina Funnell remarked:

"The Monkton Road design reflects the kind of more modern design that is springing up in parks up and down the country thanks to the Government's ‘Playbuilder' programme. Parks need to have some appeal to a wider age range of children, and this will certainly be the case with the new design.

"Residents have asked for climbing, sliding and swinging, as well as wanting towers in the park. It is not only about exercise, but about imaginative play and the new park will encourage that for all those living near to Monkton Road who choose to take advantage of the opportunity provided".
