York Pride ‘long gone’ says councillor
09 December 2009
Local councillors are asking whether York Pride has been abandoned in light of recent budget problems and they're witnessing of various issues of neglect around the city. The filth and detritus around the bus shelters on Rougier Street outside Aviva has given Micklegate councillor Dave Merrett cause for concern in an area where a great many people access and egress the city:

"On seeing this (see attached photo) I found myself asking ‘Where's the pride gone?' as it paints an appalling picture of how this city is presented to both residents and visitors alike. I don't know if under current budget pressures that cutbacks have been made on street cleaning and refuse collection, and that led to the non-replacement of the dedicated city centre's previous Street Environment Officer, John Wood, but I'm extremely concerned about this from a Micklegate ward perspective.

"Thousands of people pass through this area every day and it is a disgrace to see it neglected in this way. I will be asking for answers on why this area has been allowed to slip into such a state, presumably without any monitoring. If standards are slipping then it does not help in an economically difficult time when we need people in the city and spending, not turning them away in disgust".
