James Street link road extension backed
30 October 2008
Councillors are to give their backing to a proposal to press ahead with further improvements to the traffic system in and around the Foss Basin in Heworth. Phase 1 saw a link road open between Lawrence Street and Layerthorpe, in order to provide access to Morrisons and create a more free flowing traffic system around Foss Islands Road.
But traffic consultants Jacobs have said in an earlier report that further work needs to be done to relieve smaller streets of heavy traffic, including Mill Lane and Hawthorne Grove.
Labour's City Strategy spokesperson, Coun. Ruth Potter said:
"The traffic modelling shows that if things stay as they are, a number of road junctions would ‘approach or exceed their operating capacity'. So the extension of the link road to Heworth Green is essential, and will help to take heavy goods vehicles off small residential streets like Mill Lane.'
