Councillors join scouts in graffiti clean-up
30 September 2008
Holgate scouts will waste no time in getting back into action after their summer break as they launch a graffiti clean-up operation in the ward. They will spend 2 hours in the early evening cleaning up graffiti both today (29th) and on 3rd October.

Holgate councillors James Alexander, Denise Bowgett and Sonja Crisp have contributed to planning the clean up sessions, and have also volunteered to get their hands dirty cleaning up graffiti alongside the scouts.

A meeting earlier this month saw the scouts and their leader, councillors and local Street Environment Officer discuss which areas of Holgate should be given priority for the clean-up operation.

And Coun. Denise Bowgett, who will be joining the scouts for today's session, indicated her satisfaction at the Scouts' initiative, saying:

"I am pleased to be taking part in this. There is a lot of graffiti in Holgate at the moment and some places have been targeted a lot more than others. Hollybank garages for example has been heavily targeted so will benefit hugely from the scouts' time and effort".

Coun. James Alexander congratulated the scouts and council officers on their joint initiative:

"This graffiti clean-up operation is a tremendous demonstration of good citizenship. Where some people immaturely and irresponsibly vandalise public and private property, Holgate's scouts demonstrate the good behaviour in young people today. Holgate residents I'm sure feel proud of a community group such as this. The Scout Group leader and Street Environment Officer should also be congratulated for the leadership they have shown in this initiative".
