Fair fares for young people
29 September 2008

The council's Labour Spokesperson for city strategy, Coun. Ruth Potter is calling for the Yozone card to be extended to all young people under the age of 19 in full time education at the Council meeting later this week.

Coun. Potter says ,‘This is a straight forward motion asking that the Yozone card be extended to all young people under the age of 19 in full time education. I want to see an urgent report that looks seriously at the possible discounts bus operators would be willing to give to young people in full time education. It is particularly pertinent at this time when the school leaving age is to be raised. All parents will have to find the cash to cover transport costs. Its also important to make the fares realistic if we are to discourage parents from driving young people to college and extending the school run across the city. I also think that we can increase bus patronage in the longer term if young people start to use public transport more often at an earlier age through having cheaper fares. It seems very unfair to me that these young people are expected to pay full fare when they aren't in employment. Its just an added burden to parents. ‘
