Councillors launch ‘copter - probe
11 September 2008
Councillors in Holgate are to try and get to the bottom of repeated instances of a helicopter landing in their ward, they believe illegally. The same helicopter, reported by a local resident, has landed without permission on Victoria Stray - the piece of land between Clifton and Scarborough Bridges - it is believed on 8 occasions. Holgate councillor Denise Bowgett said:

"Some of these instances have lead to dogs and children being scared out of their wits by the surprise arrival. If you can imagine walking your dog peacefully, then the next minute a helicopter starts to descend immediately above you, then that is what has been happening. It seems to be a rather extreme, and unnecessary form of behaviour to me".

Fellow ward councillor Sonja Crisp said:

"The helicopter is alleged to have been flown in an intimidating manner, in order to get members of the public to disperse the area it wanted to land in. Not only is this dangerous, but it is also very traumatic for some people. Quite naturally it's not the kind of thing you expect when you've wandered out for a stroll. Holgate councillors have contacted the council's senior officer responsible for leisure land as well as the police to see what can be done about this behaviour, and to get it stopped".
