Super sunflower contest for Heworth
02 September 2008
Green-fingered residents are being urged to register any tall sunflowers growing in their gardens and enter Heworth ward committee's ‘tallest sunflower' competition. Heworth councillor Ruth Potter said:

"The weather may not have helped much over the summer but there still has to be a winner out there. The purpose of the competition was to encourage people to grow a sunflower, so they can see how easy it can be to grow other things too. There are allotments available in Heworth if people are interested in doing something which both saves money and is good exercise".

Sunflower competition entries need to send their applications to Heworth's Neighbourhood Management Officer not later than 1st September, at 9, St Leonard's Place, York. And the winner will be revealed shortly after once councillors have measured the entries.

Coun. Potter added:

"We will be measuring entries by visiting people to see how well they have done growing their sunflowers. So let us have your details and we will measure your sunflower. We have different categories for adults and children".
