Media Release from City of York Council Labour Group
"A month has now passed and still no news as to what is going to happen. The fact no plan B was in place, in light of the failings of the project is remarkable, but I had expected an announcement much sooner than now on what is going to happen next. There are important questions to be answered, such as what options are now on the table for any new HQ, will there still be one central HQ or more than one building, and which sites are now firmly being considered. Has the Hungate site been dispensed with as a location for the HQ?"
The council announced on 8th July that in light of the criticisms of English Heritage, it would be withdrawing plans for the new HQ. And Lib Dem criticisms of English Heritage are simply attempts to mask the current administration's own failings, according to Coun. Scott. He added:
"The public deserves to know how much money will now effectively be written off as part of this project. It also deserves to know how much extra the entire project will now cost, should new proposals have been put forward.
"It is time for the council leader to show real leadership, and actually lead rather than hide behind officers. This has been a monumental cock-up, and it is down to the ruling party to get it back on track and tell people what is happening. In a recent press article the council simply stonewalled legitimate questions on the subject which does the council no credit at all. The longer no information is forthcoming, the more it appears the council doesn't know what to do".
