Hob Moor work welcomed
13 August 2008
Councillors in Holgate ward have given their backing to the council's decision to undertake work on Hob Moor underpass. The route, used by cyclists and pedestrians, has suffered significant problems with flooding in the past and was raised as an issue in March by Holgate councillor James Alexander. He said:

"In March I spent quite some time finding out whose responsibility the underpass is, so I'm glad the council is now doing something about the drainage problem, as well as lighting and the graffiti in the underpass. Hopefully the work will mean local residents see the underpass as a route they want to use again, in contrast to the dark, wet and smelly underpass that has existed since at least last May when I was elected".

A chicane being introduced will reduce the speed of cyclists approaching from the Tadcaster Road end of the route as part of work which began last Monday, and lasting for around two weeks.

Holgate councillor Sonja Crisp said:

"Holgate councillors welcome the news that the city council has at last decided to undertake a long overdue overhaul of the Hob Moor underpass. Cyclists using that route have, over the years, been faced with a dark, dismal, and often flooded route through the underpass, the state of which was unacceptable and indeed inaccessible at times. We endeavour to encourage cycling in York and to this end we should ensure that cycle routes are not left to deteriorate as this one has been".
