Prospective MP celebrates 40 years of student radio in York
13 June 2008
Prospective Labour MP, Councillor James Alexander, is tomorrow celebrating with University colleagues, 40 years of the countries first legal independent radio station, University Radio York. The event will be held at the Park Inn Hotel on Saturday 14 June at from 7pm.
James Alexander is a former University of York Students' Union President and during his year in office, URY won the BBC Radio 1 award for best student radio station in the country (2005).
"Many people came to the University of York simply because of the reputation of the radio society. The society has such a good reputation than many who have been involved now work for the BBC, commercial radio and in television and journalism. A few of us have even dipped our toes in politics. My proudest URY moment was being nominated as best new comer in the York University Media Awards in 2003." Councillor James Alexander - URY Presenter (2002-2004)
"James and I lived on the same corridor in our first year and then shared a house in our second. We thought it would be a good idea to present on the station. I used to really enjoy presenting on URY, but I have to admit I preferred working the decks than speaking." Thomas Butterfield - URY Presenter (2002-2004)
